Our route in green.
We traveled west from our home in Knoxville, Tennessee, up
through Land Between the Lakes, through Kentucky and Illinois to
the Mississippi River. Our course then turned north, roughly
following the Mississippi River and the Great River Road as far as
Winona, Minnesota. Turning east, we drove through Wisconsin,
Chicagoland, and along the southern shore of Lake Michigan to "The
Great Southwest" of Michigan. From there it was south through
Michiana to Whitewater State Park, Indiana, where our story
ends.
Highlights along the way included Garden of the Gods, Illinois;
The World's Largest Catsup Bottle and Cahokia Mounds State Historic
Site, Collinsville, Illinois; a life-sized statue of the World's
Tallest Man, Robert Wadlow, Alton, Illinois; Future Birthplace of
Captain James T. Kirk, Riverside, Iowa; Spook Cave, McGregor, Iowa;
Culvert Man, Nodine, Minnesota; F.A.S.T. Corp., Sparta, Wisconsin;
