Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Trenton, Maine

This morning I made a reservation for the next two nights at the Acadia Sunrise Motel in Trenton, Maine, near Acadia National Park. The guy on the phone had a great accent. He probably thought I had a great accent too. We could barely communicate. It's like visiting a foreign country!

We left the hotel in Portsmouth at 9:00 a.m. in pretty dreary weather, overcast with intermittent rain. No matter – It was just as I imagined New England would be. It wasn't cold, but it looked it. It stayed in the low to mid 60s all day.

We stopped for a few minutes at York Beach, then headed north along the coast of Maine, through little New England towns with fine names like Biddeford and Kennebunk. There was a lot of repair ongoing on the terrible roads. There's not a lot of months up here with good enough weather for road work.

In Brunswick we had lunch at an Amato's Italian Sandwich. It had all the ambiance of a gas station. I ordered a lobster roll, a favorite around these parts. I'd never had one before. It was lobster salad, like tuna salad only with lobster, served on a hot dog bun with some lettuce. Big whoop. Tom had a microscopic Cuban panini. Anyway, it will tide us over till dinnertime.

Prospect, Maine

Our plan was to go up into the observation tower of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, outside Bucksport, this afternoon, but it was cloudy, foggy, and misting, with almost zero visibility, so we skipped it. Disappointing! Maybe we'll get another crack at it when leaving the area in a couple of days.

At 4:15 we arrived at the Acadia Sunrise Motel in Trenton, an old-style motor hotel like from the '70s - It even had a metal key for the door. Unlike the '70s, there's free wifi. Our room had a queen bed, microwave, fridge, and a full-size coffee maker. They gave us a room in back, away from noisy Highway 3 that connects Ellsworth to Bar Harbor – Trenton is 10 miles from each.

A little while later, we drove to Bar Harbor (pronounced "Bah Hahbah") and walked around the quaint little village till dusk, then ate at Rosalie's Pizza. We had pizza with tons of toppings and Sam Adams Octoberfest. Excellent! We returned to our hotel, drank some Cabernet, and planned our next couple of days.
