On the drive up to Akron, we just couldn't resist veering an hour out of our way to visit Campbell Hill, the highest point in Ohio! This impressive peak is located on the campus of the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center in Zanesville, the local vo-tech. I believe this is our 15th state high point, in case you're keeping score.
The earlier detour placed another point of interest right on our way: The Harding Tomb, in Marion, Ohio, final resting place of our 29th president and Ohio native Warren G. Harden and his wife, First Lady Florence Kling Harding. President Harding died in office in 1923 of cardiac arrest, two and a half years into his term. This Greek-temple-style monument was the last of the elaborate presidential tombs.
Around 6:00 p.m., we arrived at our Airbnb in Akron, Ohio. Akron is located midway along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail, a good home base while we section ride the trail and visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park, just north of town. Along with our outdoor pursuits, Ohio is home to some of the best craft breweries in the country, and we'll be hitting quite a few of those as well.
Lodging: Vintage Chic Airbnb, a one-bedroom apartment on West Market Street in the Highland Square neighborhood of Akron. Several restaurants are within easy walking distance, and the Towpath Trail is just a mile away. The apartment gave us plenty of room to spread out during our four-night stay, and it was cheaper than a hotel.
For dinner, we walked to a neighborhood bar called Frank's Place on Market. It was pretty lively for a Tuesday night! Good beer, burger, and chicken wrap. I love a good hole-in-the-wall!
