Friday, September 29, 2006 - Augsburg, Germany to Knoxville,
Tennessee
We got up at 4:50 a.m., caught the 5:45 a.m. bus to the
Munich airport, and arrived there at 7:00 a.m. Brian got off the
bus at the wrong terminal and had to walk at least a kilometer over
to where he caught his KLM flight. Tom and I waited outside for an
hour and a half before we went inside and checked in three hours
early for our Lufthansa flight.
Ready for the flight
I'll skip the wretched details and just summarize the rest of
our journey. Air travel is miserable, security to travel into the
United States is overwrought, Tom hates to fly, and surliness is
not a characteristic limited to American sky waitresses. Our plane
into Charlotte, North Carolina, was late because Lufthansa decided
to delay leaving Munich in order to wait on some passengers
arriving from Athens. Therefore, Tom and I and who knows how many
other people missed our connecting flight. We were scheduled to
arrive in Knoxville at 9:02 p.m. Instead, Tom's parents picked us
up when we FINALLY got back to the Knoxville airport at 2:00 a.m.
on Saturday, September 30. We'd been up for 27 hours.
Carlos the cat was happy to see us get home, and when I
picked up Spike-dog from camp around 10:00 Saturday morning, the
whole family was reunited, and we were all back where we should be
after another great vacation!
