Today we did the Outer Banks. I wish we'd had just a few hours longer. We didn't waste any time at Kitty Hawk, where the Wright brothers made their historic flight. We saw the memorial from afar, and it was laughable. Even more laughable is North Carolina's desire to stake some claim to aviation history by simply providing some soft sand to crash on.

We drove further and stopped at a beach we had almost to ourselves. It was very pretty.

Then we took the ferry to Ocracoke. We were starving by the time we got there and got subs from a green-haired chick with lip rings. She seemed quite out of place. We caught a second ferry to the mainland of North Carolina which took two hours. We tried to spend one last night on the beach, but it started to rain and they wanted too much for rooms. And, seriously, Moorehead City was a nasty town anyway.

We drove on to Havelock, North Carolina, where Cherry Point AFB is located, and stayed in a semi-scary little No-Tell for 38 bucks. But I have to say, of all the places we stayed on this trip that called themselves a suite, this was the first one that truly was. We ate at Sonic, America's Drive-In, and the servers wore roller skates. I thought they only did that in '50s movies. I watched the UT game and Jana fell asleep.
