Today we did the Outer Banks. I wish we'd had just a few hours
longer. We didn't waste any time at Kitty Hawk, where the Wright
brothers made their historic flight. We saw the memorial from afar,
and it was laughable. Even more laughable is North Carolina's
desire to stake some claim to aviation history by simply providing
some soft sand to crash on.
North Carolina - First in Flight
We drove further and stopped at a beach we had almost to
ourselves. It was very pretty.

The Outer Banks
Then we took the ferry to Ocracoke. We were starving by the
time we got there and got subs from a green-haired chick with lip
rings. She seemed quite out of place. We caught a second ferry to
the mainland of North Carolina which took two hours. We tried to
spend one last night on the beach, but it started to rain and they
wanted too much for rooms. And, seriously, Moorehead City was a
nasty town anyway.

Ocracoke from the Ferry
We drove on to Havelock, North Carolina, where Cherry Point AFB
is located, and stayed in a semi-scary little No-Tell for 38 bucks.
But I have to say, of all the places we stayed on this trip that
called themselves a suite, this was the first one that truly was.
We ate at Sonic, America's Drive-In, and the servers wore roller
skates. I thought they only did that in '50s movies. I watched the
UT game and Jana fell asleep.
