Of course, we didn't road trip TO Iceland, but we did drive from Knoxville to D.C., where we hopped a short 5 1/2-hour flight to the Land of Fire and Ice, then continued our journey by spending two weeks circumnavigating this spectacular country.

September is shoulder season in Iceland, just outside of the concentrated tourist season that runs from mid June to late August. Prices are lower in September (though still hugely expensive), but the weather, never predictable, is even less so then. Oh, and speaking of unpredictable, our trip also fell in the midst of an ongoing fissure eruption in Holuhraun from the Bardarbunga volcano, an eruption we feared might close the airspace and cancel our flight. But to paraphrase someone on the Tripadvisor forum, “If you wait for good weather to visit Iceland, you'll never go,” so off we went...
Note: With the exception of photo captions and page titles, I'll be using the Anglophone spelling of place names throughout the journal, i.e., Bardarbunga as opposed to Bárðarbunga, because my keyboard just doesn't have all those funky letters!
